As at 20th January 2011 United States AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) waiting lists stood at 5,500 people across 10 states.

In Florida alone the number of people waiting for treatment aid had reached almost 3000, with the state ADAP already supplyingantiretroviral drugs to 10,000 Floridians. Now it appears that being enrolled into Florida's ADAP may not be a guarantee of consistent medication supply to clients and last month the scheme reached a crisis point. Only a rescue package involving the donation of drugs from pharmaceutical companies stopped 6,500 people being dumped out of the programme. This, it has been made clear, is a purely short term measure and the state will have to assume responsibility for the supply of drugs on 1st April 2011- or drop their support, saving the state USD 10,000 per year, per patient.

Other US states are also clearly struggling to square their budgets for HIV funding, with many either applying or considering cost containment strategies. There are fears that Florida's use of pharmaceutical industry charity as a short term fix will cost other states dear in the longer term.

It has been estimated that 1-in-4 HIV positive Americans receive their treatment via ADAP schemes. Learn more about treatment and care for AIDS in America.
